Benefits of Serving Your Country

America is the greatest nation on the earth, it's history is very unique. When a young person attends school they hear about the civil war, the young men that fought in the first and second world wars, they may hear about Korea or Vietnam, or even the present day wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. All these years of service that there neighbors have given, but until you serve they are just words, JFK said “Ask not what you country can do for you, ask what can I do for my country.”

Never in the history of America has that statement meant more than it does now. The service that you may want to offer may be completed through a church organization, such as happen after Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Many church organizations have such voluntary groups that serve all over the United States, when you give this kind of service you may come to understand what service and sacrifice really means.

You may be asked to go to another state where a number of people are needed to help someone rebuild a roof, or build a deck on the house, or any number of services and you may see poverty that you never thought could exist in America. The service that you give may entail helping a senior citizen by taking them to the hospital, or helping a family who lives on food stamps make dinner. If you give service, you may learn that the greatest gift that someone can give is themselves. If you are lucky when you give service to other you may shed tears of sorrow, but it may open up your heart, then you will realize what it means to be an American.
