Donating Your Time to the Elderly

Becoming elderly for most of us is becoming non-self sufficient. It does not necessarily mean out of money, but lack of means by which to control money. Unfortunately, in either case, the elderly sometimes need voluntary support for financial means as well as social support.

Elderly people become frustrated in the fact they are not self-sufficient any longer. There are many voluntary organizations that can be of assistance beyond that of family. In many cases there is no family, and support must come from the community. Many times finances have become exhausted due to medical reasons, either for themselves or loved ones. Many elderly people have already lost friends and family. What is worse is that the ones they may have are fading fast, and they watch as they go, one by one. The mental situation becomes paramount over financial obligations. This is where an outside form of support becomes so important. Many health care organizations have volunteer programs by which to aid the elderly in emotional support. Even here within the U.S., care can vary state by state and by even county. Most have basic elderly health care, such as assisted living, adult health care, nursing homes, hospice and home nursing.

The need for care for the elderly also has financial support institutions which donate money. Most of these organizations are publicly owned and associated with the American Health Care Association, the largest in the U.S. Another strong association is the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. Almost every church in the U.S. has special voluntary programs by which to assist the elderly, both financially and emotionally.
