Volunteering at the Food Bank

When you volunteer to work at a food bank, it can become pretty hectic. You will have boxes of food that are about four feet tall and six feet wide filled with food of all kinds. It will be your job to sort the food and separate it into categories.

Once it is sorted, then you will have to help pack the bags or boxes according to the different sizes of families so that it can be distributed. You will have to make rows of bags and boxes with the number of people in the family marked on the floor. This will make the distribution go a lot faster. A family with six members in it will go to the row with the six on the floor, etc.

There will need to be several helpers in order to make sure that each row is supervised in handing the food out. Smaller families, of course, will not get as much as the larger families, but they will all get the same kind of food; only the amount will be different. You may be asked to help someone to their car with their food because they are not able to carry it. You must be kind and considerate of the people who come to get help with food orders. It takes a lot of work to ensure all of the food is given out to those who have fallen on hard times. It also takes a lot of caring to put in the hours and the days that it takes to get ready for the day it is given out.
